Mulch Calculator: Bags, Cubic Feet, and Yards

Mulch keeps soil moist, suppresses weeds, and adds a finished look to garden beds. But figuring out how many bags or cubic yards you need can be confusing. Our mulch calculator tells you exactly how much to buy for your beds, whether you prefer bagged mulch or bulk delivery.

How Much Mulch Do I Need?

The formula for calculating mulch volume is simple:

Mulch Volume = Area ร— Depth

Measure your garden bed length and width, multiply for area, then multiply by desired depth (converted to the same unit).

How Deep Should Mulch Be?

Ideal mulch depth depends on the material and purpose:

  • 2 inches โ€” minimum for weed suppression with fine mulch
  • 3 inches โ€” recommended for most beds (weed control + moisture)
  • 4 inches โ€” maximum for wood-based mulches (deeper can smother roots)
  • 2-3 inches โ€” for rubber mulch play areas
  • 2 inches โ€” for pine straw and light materials

Bags vs. Bulk Delivery

Mulch is sold two ways โ€” in bags or in bulk (by the cubic yard):

  • Bagged mulch โ€” typically 2 cu ft per bag, easier for small areas
  • Bulk mulch โ€” delivered by the cubic yard, cheaper per yard for large areas
  • 1 cubic yard = 13.5 bags (of 2 cu ft bags)

Types of Mulch

  • Wood chips / bark mulch โ€” most common, breaks down over 1-2 years
  • Cedar mulch โ€” natural insect repellent, longer lasting
  • Pine straw โ€” lightweight, acidifies soil, good for azaleas
  • Rubber mulch โ€” permanent, doesn't decompose, ideal for playgrounds
  • Cocoa shell โ€” rich brown color and fragrance, keep away from dogs
  • Straw / hay โ€” for vegetable gardens and erosion control

Example: 20ร—10 Flower Bed

20 ft ร— 10 ft garden bed, 3 inches deep, 2 cu ft bags:

  • Area: 20 ร— 10 = 200 sq ft
  • Depth in feet: 3 รท 12 = 0.25 ft
  • Volume: 200 ร— 0.25 = 50 cu ft
  • Bags (2 cu ft): 50 รท 2 = 25 bags
  • Cubic yards: 50 รท 27 = 1.85 cu yd

FAQ

How many bags of mulch are in a yard?

About 13.5 bags of 2 cubic foot mulch make one cubic yard.

How often should I add mulch?

Annual top-up of 1 inch is usually enough. Refresh every 1-2 years depending on decomposition rate.

Will mulch attract termites?

Mulch itself doesn't attract termites, but it provides a moist environment. Keep mulch 6-12 inches away from your home's foundation.
