What Is a Calorie Calculator?

A calorie calculator estimates how many calories your body burns each day and how many you should eat to reach a specific goal โ€” whether that is maintaining your current weight, losing weight, or gaining weight. It combines your basal metabolic rate (the calories you burn at rest) with your activity level to give you a daily calorie target.

Understanding BMR and TDEE

Two numbers are central to calorie planning:

  • BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate): The number of calories your body needs to function at rest โ€” breathing, circulating blood, regulating temperature, repairing cells, and all the other essential processes that keep you alive. BMR makes up roughly 60-75% of total daily calorie burn for most people.
  • TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure): Your total calories burned per day, including activity, exercise, and the thermic effect of food. TDEE = BMR ร— activity factor.

How Calorie Needs Are Calculated

Our calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation, widely considered the most accurate formula for estimating BMR:

For Men

BMR = 10 ร— weight(kg) + 6.25 ร— height(cm) - 5 ร— age + 5

For Women

BMR = 10 ร— weight(kg) + 6.25 ร— height(cm) - 5 ร— age - 161

BMR is then multiplied by an activity factor based on your lifestyle:

  • Sedentary: ร— 1.2 โ€” little to no exercise, desk job
  • Lightly Active: ร— 1.375 โ€” light exercise 1-3 days/week
  • Moderately Active: ร— 1.55 โ€” moderate exercise 3-5 days/week
  • Very Active: ร— 1.725 โ€” hard exercise 6-7 days/week
  • Extra Active: ร— 1.9 โ€” very intense training + physical job

Weight Loss and Gain Rates

One pound of body fat is roughly equivalent to 3,500 calories. This means that to lose approximately one pound per week, you need a daily calorie deficit of about 500 calories. For a slower, gentler loss of half a pound per week, aim for a 250-calorie daily deficit.

Conversely, to gain one pound per week, add about 500 calories per day to your maintenance level. Aim for a slower gain if you want to minimize fat gain while building muscle.

Note: 3,500 calories per pound is a commonly used approximation. Actual weight change varies by individual factors like metabolism, body composition, and hormonal changes.

Let us estimate daily calories for a 30-year-old woman who weighs 150 lbs (68 kg), is 5'5" (165 cm), and exercises moderately 3-5 days per week:

The Mifflin-St Jeor equation is one of the most accurate formulas available, but it is still an estimate. Individual metabolism can vary by ยฑ10-15% even among people with the same age, weight, and height. Use the numbers as a starting point and adjust based on how your weight actually changes over 2-4 weeks.

Is it safe to eat 1,200 calories a day?

For most adults, especially men and taller women, 1,200 calories per day is below the minimum needed to meet nutritional needs and maintain a healthy metabolism. Most nutrition experts recommend never going below 1,200 calories for women or 1,500 for men without medical supervision. Sustainable weight loss at a moderate rate is safer and more likely to stay off long-term.

How does muscle mass affect calorie needs?

Muscle tissue burns more calories at rest than fat tissue, so people with more muscle have a higher BMR. This is one reason strength training supports weight management โ€” it helps preserve or increase muscle mass, which keeps your metabolism higher. The Mifflin equation uses total weight and does not adjust for body composition, so very muscular people may burn slightly more than estimated.
