What Is an Age Calculator?

An age calculator determines exactly how old someone is in years, months, and days, and can also show age in other units like total days, weeks, hours, and minutes. It takes into account leap years and the varying lengths of different months to give a precise result — much more accurate than just subtracting birth years.

Why Use an Age Calculator?

  • Find your exact age for official forms and applications
  • Count down to your next birthday
  • Calculate the age gap between two people
  • Figure out how old you were on a specific date
  • Calculate a pet's age in human equivalent years
  • Track milestones — 10,000 days alive, 1 billion seconds, etc.
  • Verify age eligibility for services, benefits, or discounts

How Age Is Calculated

Calculating age might seem straightforward — just subtract the birth year from the current year — but getting the precise years, months, and days requires handling the specifics of the calendar.

The proper method is:

  1. Start with the difference in years between today and the birth date.
  2. If this year's birthday has not happened yet, subtract one year.
  3. Count the months since the last birthday (or until the next one).
  4. Count the remaining days, accounting for months with different lengths.

Age Calculation Example

Suppose someone was born on June 15, 1990, and today is January 20, 2025:

  • Years: 2025 - 1990 = 35, but the birthday has not occurred yet, so 34
  • Months since last birthday (June 2024): July through January = 7 months
  • Days: 20 days into January
  • Age: 34 years, 7 months, 20 days

Age in Different Units

Converting your age to different units puts your life in perspective:

  • Days: Your total number of days alive. A 30-year-old has lived about 10,950 days.
  • Weeks: Total weeks you have been alive. Roughly days / 7.
  • Hours: Total hours. One year = 8,760 hours (or 8,784 in a leap year).
  • Minutes: One year = 525,600 minutes.
  • Seconds: At 30 years old, you have lived nearly a billion seconds!

Fun Age Facts and Milestones

  • 1,000 days: about age 2 years and 9 months
  • 10,000 days: about age 27 years and 4.5 months
  • 20,000 days: about age 54 years and 9 months
  • 1 billion seconds: about age 31 years and 8 months
  • 2 billion seconds: about age 63 years and 4 months

Day of the Week You Were Born

Ever wondered what day of the week you were born on? Our calculator shows you. This calculation uses Zeller's congruence or similar algorithms. Fun fact: in any given year, dates like 4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10, and 12/12 always fall on the same day of the week.

Next Birthday Countdown

One of the most popular uses of an age calculator is finding out how many days until your next birthday. Our calculator includes this automatically. It also accounts for people born on February 29 in leap years — their birthday in non-leap years is usually considered February 28 or March 1 depending on legal jurisdiction.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is age counted in different cultures?

Most of the world uses the Western system where you are 0 at birth and turn 1 on your first birthday. However, traditional East Asian age reckoning (used historically in China, Korea, and Japan) counts a baby as 1 year old at birth and adds a year every Lunar New Year. Our calculator uses the Western (international) method.

What if I was born on February 29?

People born on February 29 (leap day) typically celebrate their birthday on either February 28 or March 1 in non-leap years. For legal purposes, most jurisdictions consider March 1 as the official birthday in non-leap years. In leap years, of course, you get the real date!

How accurate is this age calculator?

The age calculation is accurate to the day based on the date you enter. It accounts for all leap years and the varying lengths of months. Keep in mind that it calculates from midnight on the current date, not the exact current time, so if you were born very late or very early in the day, there could be a few hours of difference.
