Flooring Calculator: How Much Do You Need?

New flooring transforms a room, but buying the right amount matters. Too little and you cannot finish the job. Too much and you waste money. Our flooring calculator estimates exactly how many boxes, planks, or tiles you need, plus waste for cuts based on your room dimensions and flooring type.

Calculating Flooring Area

Start by measuring your room at the longest and widest points. For simple rectangular rooms:

Area = Length ร— Width

For L-shaped rooms or rooms with closets or closets, break the room into rectangles and add them up.

Waste Percentage by Pattern

You always need more flooring than just the raw area because of cuts:

  • 5-7% โ€” straight lay, simple room, few obstructions
  • 10% โ€” standard installation (most common)
  • 15% โ€” diagonal pattern or herringbone
  • 15-20% โ€” complex layouts with many angles/cut-ins

Flooring Types Compared

Common flooring options and what to consider:

  • Solid Hardwood โ€” premium look, long lifespan, can be refinished
  • Engineered Hardwood โ€” real wood top layer, more stable with humidity
  • Laminate โ€” budget-friendly, scratch-resistant, click-lock installation
  • Vinyl Plank (LVP) โ€” waterproof, great for kitchens and bathrooms
  • Carpet โ€” soft, warm, sold by the yard or square foot
  • Tile โ€” waterproof, durable, many style options

Example Calculation

A 16 ft ร— 12 ft room with laminate flooring (22 sq ft per box), 10% waste:

  • Room area: 16 ร— 12 = 192 sq ft
  • With 10% waste: 192 ร— 1.1 = 211.2 sq ft
  • Boxes: 211.2 รท 22 = 9.6 โ†’ buy 10 boxes

Cost Factors

  • Material cost โ€” the flooring itself
  • Underlayment โ€” foam or felt under the flooring (usually required)
  • Labor โ€” professional installation typically $2-$6/sq ft
  • Removal โ€” tearing out old flooring
  • Tools โ€” saws, tapping block, spacers, etc.
