What Is Body Fat Percentage?

Body fat percentage measures how much of your total body weight is made up of fat, as opposed to muscle, bone, organs, water, and other tissues. Unlike BMI, which is just based on height and weight, body fat percentage gives a clearer picture of your body composition and metabolic health.

Why Measure Body Fat?

Two people with the same weight and BMI can have very different body compositions and health risks. A person with more muscle and less fat is generally healthier than someone with the same BMI but more fat and less muscle. Tracking body fat percentage helps you see whether weight loss is coming from fat or muscle, and whether muscle gain is happening alongside fat loss.

The U.S. Navy Method

This calculator uses the U.S. Navy body fat formula, which estimates body fat percentage from simple circumference measurements and height. It is not as precise as expensive methods like DEXA scans or underwater weighing, but it is easy to do at home and gives a reasonably accurate estimate for most people.

For Men

Body Fat % = 495 / (1.0324 - 0.19077 Γ— log10(waist - neck) + 0.15456 Γ— log10(height)) - 450

For Women

Body Fat % = 495 / (1.29579 - 0.35004 Γ— log10(waist + hip - neck) + 0.22100 Γ— log10(height)) - 450

How to Measure Correctly

Accurate measurements are essential for a good estimate. Follow these guidelines:

  • Waist: Measure at the level of the belly button for men, or the narrowest part of the torso for women. Keep the tape snug but not compressing the skin. Exhale normally β€” do not suck in.
  • Neck: Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple), with the tape sloping slightly downward toward the front.
  • Hip: Measure at the widest part of the buttocks/h hips (women's formula only).
  • Height: Stand barefoot with your back against a wall for the most accurate measurement.
  • Tip: Take measurements 2-3 times and average them. Measure at the same time of day for consistency, ideally in the morning before eating.

Body Fat Category Guidelines

What is considered a β€œhealthy” body fat percentage depends on age, gender, and fitness level. Here are general ranges from the American Council on Exercise:

For Men

  • Essential fat: 2-5%
  • Athletes: 6-13%
  • Fitness: 14-17%
  • Acceptable: 18-24%
  • Obese: 25%+

For Women

  • Essential fat: 10-13%
  • Athletes: 14-20%
  • Fitness: 21-24%
  • Acceptable: 25-31%
  • Obese: 32%+

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the Navy body fat method?

The Navy method is typically within 3-5 percentage points of more accurate methods like DEXA or hydrostatic weighing. Accuracy depends on how carefully you measure and how your body compares to the population the formula was developed on. It works best for people with average body types and less well for very lean or very obese individuals.

Can I reduce body fat without losing weight?

Yes β€” this is called body recomposition. By combining strength training with a slight calorie deficit (or maintenance calories for beginners), you can simultaneously lose fat and gain muscle. The number on the scale may not change much, but your body composition improves. This is especially achievable for people new to lifting.

How quickly can I lower my body fat percentage?

A safe and sustainable rate of fat loss is about 0.5-1% of body fat per month. Faster loss is possible with more aggressive approaches, but increases the risk of muscle loss and rebound weight gain. Focus on consistent habits β€” balanced nutrition, progressive strength training, and adequate sleep β€” rather than quick fixes.
