Understanding Concrete Volume Calculations
Calculating how much concrete you need for a project is one of the most common โ and most important โ steps in any construction job. Order too little, and your pour is interrupted. Order too much, and you waste money. Our concrete calculator takes the guesswork out of the math by computing cubic yards, cubic feet, and cubic meters based on your project shape and dimensions.
How the Concrete Calculator Works
The calculator supports four common concrete shapes:
- Slab โ the most common use, for floors, patios, and driveways
- Column / Post โ cylindrical, for deck posts, fence posts, and structural columns
- Circle / Round Slab โ for circular patios, hot tub pads, and fire pits
- Footing / Trench โ for foundation footings and trench fills
The Cubic Yard Formula
Concrete is sold by the cubic yard (27 cubic feet). The basic formula is:
All measurements must be in the same unit (feet). Depth or thickness is typically in inches, so divide inches by 12 to convert to feet before calculating volume.
How Many Bags of Concrete Do I Need?
For small projects, premixed concrete bags are often more practical than ordering a truck. Coverage per bag depends on bag size:
- 80 lb bag โ covers approximately 0.6 cubic feet
- 60 lb bag โ covers approximately 0.45 cubic feet
- 40 lb bag โ covers approximately 0.3 cubic feet
Always Add Waste Factor
Industry standard is to add 5% to 10% to your calculated volume to account for spillage, uneven subgrade, and over-excavation. For slabs on grade, 10% is a safe bet. For more controlled pours like columns, 5% may be sufficient.
Example Calculation
A 20 ft ร 12 ft patio slab at 4 inches thick:
- Depth in feet: 4 รท 12 = 0.333 ft
- Volume: 20 ร 12 ร 0.333 = 80 cu ft
- Cubic yards: 80 รท 27 = 2.96 cu yd
- With 10% waste: 3.26 cu yd โ order 3.5 cu yd
FAQ
How thick should a concrete driveway be?
Residential driveways are typically 4 inches thick for passenger cars and 5-6 inches for heavier vehicles.
How long does concrete take to dry?
Concrete cures to foot traffic in about 24-48 hours and reaches full strength in 28 days.
What is a yard of concrete?
A yard of concrete is one cubic yard โ a cube 3 ft ร 3 ft ร 3 ft = 27 cubic feet.
