Deck Components Explained

Joist Spacing
Joists are typically spaced:
- 16" on center — standard for most decking
- 12" on center — for heavier loads or thinner decking
- 24" on center — only with thicker, stiffer decking
Post & Beam Spacing
Support posts are typically 6 to 8 feet apart for standard decks. The exact spacing depends on:
- Deck height above grade
- Beam size and material
- Local building code requirements
- Expected live load (typically 40 psf minimum)
