Deck Materials Calculator: Plan Your Perfect Deck

Building a deck adds outdoor living space and value to your home. But getting the right materials โ€” not too many, not too few โ€” makes the project go smoothly. Our deck materials calculator estimates decking boards, support posts, and fasteners based on your deck dimensions and design.

Deck Components Explained

A deck consists of several structural elements:

  • Decking boards โ€” the walking surface (top layer)
  • Joists โ€” horizontal framing under the decking
  • Beams / girders โ€” support the joists
  • Posts โ€” vertical support columns
  • Footings โ€” concrete below the posts
  • Fasteners โ€” screws, nails, hidden fastener systems

Decking Board Calculation

Deck boards run perpendicular to joists. Calculate total lineal feet needed:

Board Count = (Deck Width รท Board Width + Gap) ร— Deck Length

Standard deck boards are 5-1/2" wide (5/4 decking) with a 1/8" gap between boards.

Joist Spacing

Joists are typically spaced:

  • 16" on center โ€” standard for most decking
  • 12" on center โ€” for heavier loads or thinner decking
  • 24" on center โ€” only with thicker, stiffer decking

Post & Beam Spacing

Support posts are typically 6 to 8 feet apart for standard decks. The exact spacing depends on:

  • Deck height above grade
  • Beam size and material
  • Local building code requirements
  • Expected live load (typically 40 psf minimum)

Decking Material Options

  • Pressure-treated pine โ€” most affordable, requires staining every 2-3 years
  • Cedar / Redwood โ€” naturally rot-resistant, beautiful, premium cost
  • Composite (Trex, Fiberon, etc.) โ€” low maintenance, 25+ year warranty
  • PVC / vinyl โ€” 100% synthetic, never needs staining
  • Ipe / tropical hardwoods โ€” extremely durable, exotic look

Example: 12ร—16 Deck

12 ft deep ร— 16 ft wide, 16" OC joists, composite decking:

  • Decking boards: ~32 boards (16 ft long each)
  • Joists: 10 joists (12 ft long, 16" OC)
  • Beams: 2 beams (16 ft long, doubled 2ร—10)
  • Fasteners: ~350 hidden fasteners or ~700 screws

FAQ

How many deck boards do I need?

Divide deck width by (board width + gap). 16 ft wide deck with 5.5" decking = ~32 boards.

What is the standard deck board size?

Most common is 5/4" ร— 6" (actual 1" ร— 5.5") decking boards.

How much does a deck cost?

$15-$35 per square foot on average, depending on materials and whether DIY vs professional.
