Drywall Calculator: Sheets, Screws, and Mud

Estimating drywall materials accurately saves money and prevents wasted trips to the store. Our drywall calculator estimates how many sheets of drywall, screws, joint compound, and tape you will need for walls and ceilings based on room dimensions.

Calculating Drywall Sheets

The basic calculation is total wall and ceiling area divided by sheet area:

Sheets = (Wall Area + Ceiling Area โˆ’ Openings) รท Sheet Area

Always add 10% for waste, cuts, and mistakes. For complex rooms with many angles, add 15%.

Standard Drywall Sheet Sizes

  • 4' ร— 8' โ€” most common, 32 sq ft, fits through doors easily
  • 4' ร— 10' โ€” 40 sq ft, for taller walls and fewer joints
  • 4' ร— 12' โ€” 48 sq ft, professional preference for large rooms
  • 4' ร— 9' โ€” 36 sq ft, for 9 ft ceilings

Drywall Thickness

  • 1/4" โ€” curved walls, repairs, and overlays
  • 3/8" โ€” repair work and ceiling patches
  • 1/2" โ€” standard for walls and ceilings (most common)
  • 5/8" โ€” fire-rated, sound dampening, ceiling joists 24" OC

Screws, Tape, and Joint Compound

Along with sheets, you will need:

  • Screws โ€” approximately 28-32 screws per 4ร—8 sheet
  • Joint tape โ€” paper or mesh; ~0.4 ft per sq ft of drywall
  • Joint compound (mud) โ€” ~0.05 gallons per square foot of drywall
  • Corner bead โ€” for all outside corners

Example: 12ร—10 Room

12 ft ร— 10 ft room, 8 ft ceiling, 4ร—8 sheets:

  • Perimeter: 2 ร— (12+10) = 44 ft
  • Wall area: 44 ร— 8 = 352 sq ft
  • Ceiling area: 12 ร— 10 = 120 sq ft
  • Less openings (1 door + 2 windows): โˆ’50 sq ft
  • Total: 422 sq ft โ†’ 422 รท 32 = 13.2 sheets
  • With 10% waste: 15 sheets

Installation Tips

  • Hang ceilings first, then walls โ€” wall sheets support ceiling edges
  • Run sheets horizontally (lengthwise) for fewer seams
  • Stagger end joints so they don't line up across walls
  • Use type S screws for walls, type W for wood studs, type G for attaching to existing drywall
  • Mud and tape in three coats for a professional finish
