Dog Age Calculator: Dog Years to Human Years

The old saying that "one dog year equals seven human years" is actually a myth. Dogs age much faster in their first two years and then slow down, with the rate depending heavily on breed size. This calculator uses the modern veterinary formula to give you a far more accurate estimate.

The Modern Dog Age Formula

Veterinarians now use a staged formula that reflects real canine development:

First year = 15 human years
Second year = 9 more human years
Each year after = +4 to +6 (by size)

Small dogs (under 20 lb) add about 4 human years per dog year after turning 2, medium dogs (20-50 lb) add about 5, and large dogs (over 50 lb) add about 6 โ€” large breeds age fastest.

Example Calculation

  • A 5-year-old medium dog: 24 + (3 x 5) = about 39 human years
  • A 5-year-old large dog: 24 + (3 x 6) = about 42 human years

FAQ

Is 1 dog year really 7 human years?

No. That rule is oversimplified. The first two years equal roughly 24 human years, then the rate slows.

Why does breed size matter?

Large and giant breeds have shorter lifespans and age more quickly on average than small breeds.

How can I tell a dog's age?

A vet can estimate age by examining teeth, eyes, coat, and muscle tone. Dental wear is the most common indicator.
