What Is Roof Pitch?

Roof pitch is a measurement of how steep a roof is. It is typically expressed as a ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run, most commonly written as “X in 12” — meaning the roof rises X inches for every 12 inches of horizontal distance. A 4:12 pitch means the roof rises 4 inches for every foot of horizontal span.

Why Roof Pitch Matters

  • Water and snow drainage: Steeper roofs shed water and snow faster. Flat or low-pitch roofs in snowy climates risk structural damage from heavy snow loads.
  • Material compatibility: Different roofing materials require minimum pitches. Asphalt shingles typically need at least 2:12, while metal roofs can go as low as 0.5:12 with proper seaming.
  • Cost: Steeper roofs cost more to install because they have more surface area and require more safety equipment.
  • Architectural style: Pitch is a major factor in a building's visual character — from flat modern roofs to dramatic gabled roofs.

The angle between the roof surface and the horizontal. Calculated using the arctangent of the pitch ratio:

Percentage (Grade)

Used in civil engineering and sometimes in roofing. The rise divided by the run, expressed as a percentage:

How to Measure Roof Pitch

You do not need to climb onto your roof to measure pitch. Here are three easy methods:

  1. From inside the attic: Hold a level horizontally against a rafter. Measure 12 inches along the level, then measure the vertical distance from the level down to the rafter. That measurement is your rise — so a 6-inch rise = 6:12 pitch.
  2. With a speed square: Roofing speed squares have a pitch scale. Just rest the square on the rafter and read the pitch directly.
  3. From the gable end: If you can see the triangle of a gable end, measure the total rise and total run of the gable, then divide to find the ratio per foot.

  • Built-up / flat roof: 0.25:12 (1/4" per foot)
  • Standing seam metal: 0.5:12 to 1:12 (depends on seaming)

What pitch is too steep to walk on?
