What Is the Amazon FBA Calculator?

The Amazon FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) calculator helps sellers estimate their net profit per unit when selling on Amazon using the FBA program. It accounts for the product cost, Amazon referral fee, FBA fulfillment fees, and any other costs, so you know exactly how much money you actually keep per sale.

Why You Need to Know Your FBA Profit

Many new Amazon sellers are shocked when they see their actual profits after all fees. A product that seems profitable at first glance — buy for $8, sell for $29.99 — might leave you with barely a few dollars per unit after Amazon takes its cut. Running the numbers before you launch a product prevents costly mistakes and helps you choose products that actually make money.

Amazon FBA Fees Explained

1. Referral Fee

Amazon charges a referral fee (essentially a commission) on every sale. The percentage depends on the product category:

  • Most categories: 15%
  • Electronics / cell phones: 8% (for portion under $100), 15% above
  • Clothing / footwear / luggage: 17%
  • Automotive: 12% (under $100), 10% (above)
  • Health & personal care: 15% (under $10), 8% (above)
  • Books: 15%
  • Home & garden: 15%
  • Toys & games: 15%
  • Beauty: 15%

Our calculator uses 15% as the default, but you can adjust it for your category.

2. FBA Fulfillment Fee

Amazon charges a per-unit fee for picking, packing, shipping, and customer service. The fee depends on the size and weight of your product. Amazon categorizes products into size tiers:

  • Small standard: under 10 oz, under 6″ × 4″ × 1.4″
  • Large standard: under 20 lb, under 18″ × 14″ × 8″
  • Small oversize: under 70 lb, under 60″ × 30″ × 24″
  • Medium oversize: under 150 lb, under 108″ × 60″ × 36″
  • Large oversize: over 150 lb or very large dimensions

FBA fulfillment fees typically range from about $3.50 for small standard-size items to $10+ for oversize items. Our calculator uses an estimate — for exact current fees, check Amazon's official fee schedule in Seller Central, as rates change periodically.

3. Other Costs

  • Product cost (COGS): What you pay to manufacture or source each unit.
  • Shipping to Amazon: The cost to send inventory to Amazon's warehouses, per unit.
  • Storage fees: Monthly storage fees (usually $0.50-$1.00 per cubic foot for standard size), plus long-term storage fees for inventory over 365 days.
  • Advertising (PPC): Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands costs. Many sellers spend 10-30% of revenue on ads.
  • Returns and refunds: Plan for a return rate of 2-10% depending on category.

FBA Profit Calculation Example

Let us run through a typical product scenario:

  • Sale price: $24.99
  • Product cost: $5.50
  • Shipping to Amazon: $1.00 per unit
  • Referral fee: 15% ($3.75)
  • FBA fulfillment fee: $4.50 (large standard)
  • Advertising: 15% of sale price ($3.75)
  • Misc: $0.50 per unit (storage, returns buffer)

Total costs: 5.50 + 1.00 + 3.75 + 4.50 + 3.75 + 0.50 = $19.00

Net profit per unit: $24.99 - $19.00 = $5.99
Profit margin: about 24%

Profitability Benchmarks for FBA

  • Minimum 30% gross margin: Aim for at least 30% after COGS and Amazon fees, before advertising. This gives you room for ads and still leaves a profit.
  • $5+ net profit per unit: Products with less than $5 profit per unit can be risky — small fee changes, return spikes, or price competition can quickly wipe out your margin.
  • ROI (Return on Investment): Many sellers aim for 100%+ ROI, meaning the profit is at least equal to the cost of the product. Lower ROI can work for high-volume products.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good profit margin for Amazon FBA?

A healthy net profit margin for Amazon FBA sellers is typically 15-30% after all costs (product, fees, advertising, overhead). New sellers often see lower margins initially as they optimize their product listing and advertising strategy.

Are FBA fees the same for every seller?

FBA fulfillment fees are the same for all sellers based on product size tier and weight. However, sellers with the Individual selling plan pay an additional $0.99 per item fee, while Professional sellers pay a flat $39.99 monthly subscription with no per-item fee. If you sell more than about 40 items per month, the Professional plan is usually cheaper.

How often do Amazon fees change?

Amazon typically updates FBA fees once or twice a year, usually in January and sometimes mid-year. Referral fees change less frequently. Always check the latest fee schedule in Seller Central for the most current numbers, and use our calculator to see how fee changes affect your bottom line.
