How to Calculate Asphalt Tons
The calculation involves two steps — find the volume, then convert to weight:
Length and width in feet, thickness in feet (inches ÷ 12). Density in pounds per cubic foot. Result is US short tons (2000 lbs).
Asphalt Density
Different asphalt mixes have different densities:
- Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) — ~145 lbs/cu ft (standard paving)
- Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) — ~142 lbs/cu ft (lower temp)
- Porous Asphalt — ~120 lbs/cu ft (permeable, drainage)
- A general rule of thumb: 1 cubic yard ≈ 2 tons

How thick does asphalt need to be?
- Residential driveway — 2-3 inches (on 6-8" base)
- Heavier use driveway — 3-4 inches (RVs, trucks)
- Parking lot (light) — 3 inches
- Parking lot (heavy) — 4-5 inches
- Road / highway — 6-8+ inches (multiple lifts)
- Path / walkway — 2 inches
Example: 40×10 Driveway
40 ft × 10 ft residential driveway, 3 inches thick:
- Area: 40 × 10 = 400 sq ft
- Thickness in feet: 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft
- Volume: 400 × 0.25 = 100 cu ft
- Cubic yards: 100 ÷ 27 = 3.7 cu yd
- Weight (HMA): 100 × 145 = 14,500 lbs = 7.25 tons
- With waste: ~7.5-8 tons
