Asphalt Calculator: Tons and Cost Estimate

Asphalt paving projects require accurate tonnage estimates since asphalt is typically sold by weight, not volume. Our asphalt calculator converts your project dimensions into tons, accounting for density variations between asphalt types.

How to Calculate Asphalt Tons

The calculation involves two steps โ€” find the volume, then convert to weight:

Tons = (Length ร— Width ร— Thickness) ร— Density รท 2000

Length and width in feet, thickness in feet (inches รท 12). Density in pounds per cubic foot. Result is US short tons (2000 lbs).

Asphalt Density

Different asphalt mixes have different densities:

  • Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) โ€” ~145 lbs/cu ft (standard paving)
  • Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) โ€” ~142 lbs/cu ft (lower temp)
  • Porous Asphalt โ€” ~120 lbs/cu ft (permeable, drainage)
  • A general rule of thumb: 1 cubic yard โ‰ˆ 2 tons

Asphalt Thickness Guide

How thick does asphalt need to be?

  • Residential driveway โ€” 2-3 inches (on 6-8" base)
  • Heavier use driveway โ€” 3-4 inches (RVs, trucks)
  • Parking lot (light) โ€” 3 inches
  • Parking lot (heavy) โ€” 4-5 inches
  • Road / highway โ€” 6-8+ inches (multiple lifts)
  • Path / walkway โ€” 2 inches

Example: 40ร—10 Driveway

40 ft ร— 10 ft residential driveway, 3 inches thick:

  • Area: 40 ร— 10 = 400 sq ft
  • Thickness in feet: 3 รท 12 = 0.25 ft
  • Volume: 400 ร— 0.25 = 100 cu ft
  • Cubic yards: 100 รท 27 = 3.7 cu yd
  • Weight (HMA): 100 ร— 145 = 14,500 lbs = 7.25 tons
  • With waste: ~7.5-8 tons

Cost Considerations

  • Asphalt cost โ€” $100-$200 per ton (varies by location and oil prices)
  • Labor / installation โ€” typically $3-$6 per sq ft
  • Base prep โ€” grading, gravel base, compaction
  • Sealcoating โ€” recommended 6-12 months after paving, then every 2-3 years
  • Striping โ€” for parking lots

FAQ

How much does a ton of asphalt cost?

$100-$200 per ton on average, depending on location, mix type, and market conditions.

How many square feet does a ton of asphalt cover?

At 3 inches thick, one ton covers roughly 40-45 square feet.

How long does an asphalt driveway last?

15-20 years with proper maintenance (sealcoating every 2-3 years, crack filling as needed).
