For example, if you need to wake up at 7:00 AM, ideal bedtimes would be around 10:00 PM (9 cycles โ€” no, that is too much), 11:30 PM (5 cycles = 7.5 hrs), or 1:00 AM (4 cycles = 6 hours). But do not forget to add the 15 minutes it typically takes to fall asleep.

Tips for Better Sleep Quality

Timing matters, but quality matters even more. Here is how to improve the quality of your sleep so you get more restorative deep and REM sleep:

  • Keep consistent sleep and wake times โ€” even on weekends. This trains your body's circadian rhythm.
  • Create a dark, cool bedroom โ€” 60โ€“67ยฐF (15โ€“19ยฐC) is the recommended sleep temperature range.
  • Avoid screens before bed โ€” blue light from phones and laptops suppresses melatonin production.
  • Limit caffeine in the afternoon โ€” caffeine has a 6-hour half-life; a 3 PM coffee is still 50% in your system at 9 PM.
