What Is BMR and Why Does It Matter?

The Mifflin-St Jeor Formula

BMR is the baseline โ€” calories burned at complete rest. Your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is BMR multiplied by an activity factor that accounts for movement, exercise, and daily tasks:

For most weight management purposes, TDEE is the more relevant number โ€” it represents your true maintenance calories. But BMR is the foundation that everything else builds on.

Why Your BMR Changes With Age

BMR typically decreases by about 1โ€“2% per decade after age 20. This decline is primarily due to sarcopenia โ€” the gradual loss of muscle mass that comes with aging. Muscle is metabolically active tissue; the more you have, the more calories you burn even at rest.

Limitations of BMR Calculators

While the Mifflin-St Jeor equation is the best population-level estimate, individual BMR can vary by ยฑ10โ€“15% due to factors the formula doesn't account for: body composition, genetics, medication use, thyroid function, recent dieting history, and pregnancy.

For the most accurate measurement, you would need indirect calorimetry testing (breath test), DEXA scan, or a metabolic chamber. But for everyday purposes, a well-calculated BMR estimate is more than sufficient for planning your nutrition and fitness.
