What Is a Normal Menstrual Cycle?
A menstrual cycle is counted from the first day of one period to the first day of the next. A typical cycle lasts about 28 days, but a healthy cycle can range from 21 to 35 days in adults. A period calculator uses your most recent period start date and your average cycle length to predict future periods, ovulation, and fertile windows.
Tracking your cycle helps you understand your body's rhythm. If your periods are fairly regular, predictions can be quite accurate. If your cycle varies a lot from month to month, the estimates should be treated as a general guide rather than an exact schedule.
How Ovulation and the Fertile Window Work
Ovulation usually happens about 14 days before your next period begins, not 14 days after the previous one. The fertile window includes the five days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself, because sperm can survive for several days while the egg is viable for about 24 hours. Knowing this window is useful whether you are trying to conceive or trying to avoid pregnancy.
Because the timing depends on when the next period will start, a longer or shorter cycle shifts ovulation. That is why tracking several cycles gives a better picture than relying on a single month. Our period calculator lays out the next several cycles so you can see the pattern.
When to Talk to a Doctor
Irregular, very heavy, or painful periods can be a sign of an underlying condition. If your cycles are consistently shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days, or if your period suddenly changes, it is worth discussing with a healthcare provider. A tracker is a helpful journal but never a substitute for medical advice.
