Lean Body Mass: What It Is and How to Calculate It

Lean body mass (LBM) is everything in your body that is not fat โ€” muscles, bones, organs, skin, water, blood, and connective tissue. Knowing your lean body mass is useful for setting protein targets, estimating resting metabolic rate, tracking fitness progress, and understanding your body composition beyond just weight on the scale.

Why Lean Body Mass Matters

Two people with the same weight can look very different depending on how much of that weight is muscle versus fat. Lean body mass is metabolically active โ€” it burns more calories at rest than fat does. The more muscle you carry, the higher your metabolism.

Tracking LBM over time is especially useful during weight loss: if your scale weight is going down but your LBM is staying the same (or close), you are losing mostly fat, which is good. If your LBM is dropping significantly, you may be losing muscle and need to eat more protein or add resistance training.

The Boer Formula

The Boer formula (1984) is one of the most widely used and accurate equations for estimating lean body mass from simple body measurements. It uses weight and height and is gender-specific:

For men: LBM = 0.407 ร— weight(kg) + 0.267 ร— height(cm) โˆ’ 19.2

For women: LBM = 0.252 ร— weight(kg) + 0.473 ร— height(cm) โˆ’ 48.3

The Boer formula was developed based on a large sample of adults and is generally more accurate than the older Hume formula, especially for younger and middle-aged adults. Like all formulas, it is an estimate โ€” individual results may vary.

Body Fat Percentage and LBM

Once you know your lean body mass, you can calculate your body fat percentage and vice versa:

Body Fat % = (Weight โˆ’ LBM) รท Weight ร— 100

LBM = Weight ร— (1 โˆ’ Body Fat % รท 100)

For example, a person weighing 70 kg with 20% body fat has: 70 kg ร— (1 โˆ’ 0.20) = 56 kg of lean body mass.

How to Measure Lean Body Mass Most Accurately

While formulas like Boer are convenient and give a reasonable estimate, there are more accurate (but more expensive or less accessible) methods:

  • DEXA Scan: Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry โ€” the gold standard for body composition measurement. Uses low-dose X-rays to distinguish between bone, fat, and lean mass. Highly accurate (~1โ€“2% error).
  • Hydrostatic Weighing: Underwater weighing based on Archimedes' principle. Very accurate (~2โ€“3% error) but impractical for most people.
  • Bod Pod: Air displacement plethysmography โ€” sits in a chamber and measures body volume by air displacement. Accurate (~2โ€“3% error) and quick, but not widely available.
  • Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA): Sends a small electrical current through the body. Cheap and widely available in scales, but can be inaccurate (3โ€“5%+ error) depending on hydration, food intake, and time of day.

How to Increase Lean Body Mass

Building lean body mass โ€” primarily muscle โ€” requires two things: resistance training stimulus and adequate nutrition. Here is how:

  • Lift weights regularly: Progressive resistance training is the single most effective way to build muscle. Aim for 3โ€“5 days per week targeting all major muscle groups.
  • Eat enough protein: 1.6โ€“2.2 g of protein per kg of body weight per day provides the amino acids needed for muscle growth.
  • Eat enough calories: You need energy to build muscle. A small surplus (200โ€“500 calories above maintenance) supports the fastest gains. Beginners can sometimes build muscle at maintenance or even a small deficit ("newbie gains").
