Overtime Calculator: How Much Extra Pay Are You Owed?

If you work more than 40 hours in a week, you are generally entitled to overtime pay. Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), overtime is paid at 1.5 times your regular hourly rate. This calculator helps you figure out your total weekly earnings, including overtime.

How Overtime Pay Works

The standard overtime calculation is:

Overtime Rate = Regular Rate x 1.5
Total Pay = (40 x Rate) + (OT Hours x 1.5 x Rate)

Double time (2.0x) may apply in some states or union contracts after a certain number of hours, such as over 12 hours in a single day in California.

Example Calculation

Hourly rate of $20, 45 hours worked in a week:

  • Regular pay: 40 x $20 = $800
  • Overtime hours: 5
  • Overtime pay: 5 x $30 = $150
  • Total weekly pay: $950

Is overtime taxed differently?

No, overtime is taxed as ordinary income, but a larger paycheck may push some income into a higher bracket.
