Fuel Cost Calculator: What Does Your Trip Cost?

Before a road trip or a daily commute, it helps to know exactly how much you will spend on fuel. This calculator uses your trip distance, vehicle's fuel efficiency, and current gas price to estimate the total fuel cost — and even the per-person split if you are carpooling.

How Fuel Cost Is Calculated

Gallons Needed = Trip Distance / Fuel Efficiency (MPG)
Total Cost = Gallons Needed x Price Per Gallon

Miles per gallon (MPG) measures how far your vehicle travels on one gallon of fuel. Higher MPG means lower fuel cost per mile.

Example Calculation

A 300-mile trip in a car that gets 25 MPG with gas at $3.50 per gallon:

  • Gallons needed: 300 / 25 = 12 gallons
  • Total cost: 12 x $3.50 = $42.00
  • Split between 4 people: $10.50 each

FAQ

How do I find my car's MPG?

Check your owner's manual, the fuel economy sticker, or online fuel economy databases. Combined MPG is the most realistic for mixed driving.

Does speed affect fuel cost?

Yes. Aggressive driving and speeds over about 55-65 mph reduce fuel efficiency significantly.

Should I account for extra trips?

For a road trip, add about 10% to your distance for detours, parking, and unplanned stops.
